Progression ROUTES
From Teacher to Leader🧭
Once you’ve achieved Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), you’ll be classed as an early career teacher (ECT) for your first two years.
During this time, you’ll receive a tailored package of training and support to help you build confidence, develop your skills, and thrive in the classroom.
This support is designed to set you up for success and won’t affect your pay or career progression - you can continue moving up the pay scale as you gain experience.
Teaching offers clear opportunities to grow. From developing expertise in your classroom to taking on leadership roles, the skills and experience you gain in these early years will open doors to exciting future pathways.

Develop
Expertise📜
National Professional Qualifications (NPQs) provide training and support for teachers and school leaders at every stage of their career.
Designed for education professionals, NPQs can be completed flexibly around your teaching schedule.
There are two main types of NPQs:
1️⃣ Specialist NPQs: Develop your knowledge, expertise, and skills in specific areas of teaching practice, both inside and outside the classroom.
2️⃣ Leadership NPQs: Build your leadership skills and prepare for more senior roles, from leading a team to shaping whole-school strategy.
Salary

Your pay is reviewed annually, and most teachers progress up the pay scale each year, depending on your school’s performance management arrangements.
With experience, a typical teacher can expect to earn at least £43,607 after five years — and often more in London.
Teaching offers a rewarding career with clear salary progression and opportunities to grow.
