For Dave Church, Teacher and Lead Practitioner at Ranikhet Academy, teaching is about far more than delivering lessons. It is rooted in moral purpose, empathy and a belief that every child deserves the best possible start in life.
Inspired by exceptional primary teachers, Dave’s love of learning began early. Their kindness and genuine care left a lasting impression and shaped his desire to help children realise who they can be. He believes the early years play a critical role in building confidence, curiosity and a sense of possibility that stays with pupils long after they leave the classroom.

Across a varied career, Dave has learned that schools are built on relationships. While everyone shares a commitment to pupils, working with adults brings complexity. Effective leadership, he believes, is not about hierarchy but collaboration. When he first stepped into middle leadership, he quickly realised that honesty, kindness and clear communication matter far more than titles.
In his role as Lead Practitioner, Dave focuses on strengthening teaching and learning across the school. He supports colleagues, mentors Early Career Teachers and works across the trust with trainee teachers and subject leaders. His approach is deliberately collaborative; he works alongside teachers to find solutions that fit their context, always returning to the importance of trust and relationships.
After more than a decade in teaching, Dave continues to challenge himself professionally. Joining the Chartered Teacher Programme provided validation, helped counter imposter syndrome and kept his practice current. He values innovation, including the thoughtful use of AI, but remains clear that professional judgement and human insight are irreplaceable.

Dave’s personal journey has shaped his commitment to inclusion, equity and empathy. As someone who is LGBTQ+ and the first in his family to attend university, he brings a deep understanding of what it means to feel othered and the importance of being heard. These experiences underpin his belief that vulnerability, reflection and compassion are strengths in leadership.
For Dave, teaching is not about instant results or measurable impact alone. It is about showing up, day after day, with the belief that every interaction matters. It is this quiet, consistent commitment that defines his practice and continues to inspire the children and colleagues he works with.
